1. KINKY HAIR IS HARD TO MANAGE
The lack of understanding how to properly care for coarser hair types is the only thing that makes this hair “hard to manage”. Often times, people attempt to use hair styling techniques used by others with different hair textures that simply don’t work for coarser, curly hair. Learning about and implementing a better hair care routine specific to your hair type is a must in maintaining healthy kinky, coarse hair. Check out our hair care tips in our latest blog, “4 Quick Tips to Prepare your Natural Hair for Weather”.
2. YOU MUST ADD GREASE TO YOUR SCALP FOR HAIR GROWTH
While we haven’t found studies to show this, we believe one good reason this concept arises is due to the science behind this hair type. Our scalp naturally produces its own protective oil called sebum. For tighter coiled hair textures, it is more difficult for this sebum to spread over the entire hair strand as it grows out of the hair follicle, which is why this hair texture can feel dry. Realizing the need for more oil we began the concept of “greasing our scalps”. However, adding grease (i.e. petroleum or mineral oil) to the scalp clogs the pores in your scalp which can make your hair unhealthy and prone to breakage in the long run. A healthier option to adding moisture and nourishment to your hair is our moisturizing creams which contain butters and oils historically known for restoring natural hair while adding shine and elasticity.
3. BRAID STYLES ARE A GREAT WAY TO PROTECT YOUR NATURAL HAIR
Kinky, curly hair is a delicate hair type that requires special care to be healthy. Braid styles are beautifiul, but must be installed carefully to avoid damaging your hair. For more information, read our post, “How Protective Are “Protective Styles”?” to see how many of these styles can be damaging and what you can do to keep your hair healthy while wearing such styles.
4. EXCESSIVE HAIR SHED IS DUE TO MY “HEAVY HAND” WHEN DETANGLING
Since tightly coiled or kinky hair is weaker than other hair textures it requires more careful handling and maintenance to minimize breakage of these precious tresses. However, if you are experiencing an excessive amount of hair shed while detangling and styling your hair, it could be due to something far more damaging than being heavy handed. From using improper detangling tools to experiencing emotional stress, there could be a countless number of reasons why your hair may be shedding. Often hair shed is confused with hair loss, so first make sure you understand which may be taking place with your hair and consider the proper treatment. Learn how to tell the difference by checking out our post on hair shed vs. loss.
5. CARING FOR KINKY HAIR TAKES TOO MUCH TIME
Many naturalistas have complained that it takes far too much time to care and style their hair, so they find that wearing “protective styles” helps to keep this time to a minimum week to week. However, we’ve found that when using hair care products that can perform most of the “heavy-lifting” of your routine, it can greatly reduce the time you spend washing, detangling and styling your hair. Check out our video of The Hair Bakery Experience of a fellow naturalista to see how our products performed.
